1.英国留学推荐信要怎么写?

一、什么是Reference Letter?

在开始下笔之前,首先要搞清楚推荐信是什么。作为欧美国家留学申请中必不可少的环节,推荐信实际是申请学校了解你的一个途径,通过你身边得教授、导师等的书信来了解你在学习和专业方向的表现和真实情况。

 英国的学校一般都支持网上提交推荐信,但是有些学校在收到推荐信后会通过邮件回访老师,这种情况下,造假是要不得的。不过既然有些情况下需要自己写推荐信,那么推荐信的内容务必要真实准确,并且要客观,不能全是一味的追捧,否则一眼就会看出是学生自己写的,即使申请不会被撤回,这封信的效果也会大打折扣。

 二、如何选择推荐人?

 无论是申请研究生还是Ph.D,不同的申请目标都有不同类型的推荐信。比如申请Master研究生,如果是要提交三封推荐信的话,那么比较好的搭配是课程老师+科研老师+实习负责人;而申请博士则尽量选择和科研相关的指导老师。不同的侧重点会勾勒出你全面的形象,负责筛选申请人的老师也能从推荐信中的事例了解你平时的某些优秀品质,比如学习努力、做事仔细等等。

 三、推荐信怎么写?

 第一段推荐人要自报家门,陈述自己是谁,在哪里就职,和被推荐人是什么关系。其中最重要的就是要写清楚推荐人和申请人的关系。比如说一起共事多久啦,平时的合作频率是多少啦之类的。如果平时接触地不是很多,可以侧重说明两人一起合作的深度。无论从哪种角度,都要传达出推荐人对于被推荐人很了解,而非一面之缘的信息。

 第二段主要写推荐人对被推荐人的综合评价。这里推荐人可以先用一句或者一段话来描述申请人(当然也不一定),比如“I’d rate Kate’s academic performance in my class as superior”,然后再描述申请人的客观表现,比如平时总是会在课上举手问问题,能找到别人没注意到的细节,或者会对同班同学课上回答的问题进行积极的反馈和补充等等。等于先下定义,然后再列举例子来支撑前面的综合评价。

 第三段主要评价申请人的优秀品质和学术潜力。这里的灵活性和主观性就比较大了。除了课堂上的表现,推荐人还可以通过和申请人的共事过程中的体验来侧面体现申请人的优秀品质,比如:交上来的论文总是结构清晰,格式准确,来体现做事仔细,对学术认真;或者除了规定的reading list之外,申请人还经常能在课上旁征博引别的学术资源,其实也就说明这个学生有学习主动性,而且学术广度比较大。注意这里不要写推荐人不可能知道的事情,比如经常“学习到很晚”或者“经常课下和同学发邮件交流学习”等等,否则整封推荐信就会显得失真了。

 最后一段总结一下。可以说说自己为什么写推荐信,谈谈申请人如果被录取,能为学校或者课题组带来什么积极贡献。段落的末尾要表达愿意提供额外的信息,比如“If you need any further information about Kate, please do not hesitate to contact me.”

 四、推荐信的注意事项

 1.推荐信切记不要太长,一般一页A4纸,大约400字就完全可以了。推荐信虽然没有字数要求,但是一般教授都不会在一封推荐信上花费太多时间,所以像委员之前提过的,如果是自己撰写内容给老师签字的话,写得太长也会让招生老师产生不信任感。

 2.用词尽量朴实客观,少用“amazing”,“incredible”等词汇。尤其是在英国,教授给学生的信都是很朴实的,不会用太过夸张的词汇。而且英国本身也有“Tonedown”(低调)的传统,即使在自己写的简历中也不会自夸得太厉害。如果信中出现了太多高调的词语,会让招生老师产生关乎可信度的怀疑。

1、英国是留学费用极高的国家
